Progressing through the Digital Design Workshop - I am referring to the "Death Star Companion" in order to formulate the structure and layout for the essay I need to produce at the end of the term. Being an avid Star Wars fan since I was a young girl, the idea of working parallel to the star wars universe captured my attention, and with my theme of biodiversity and utopia reaching across all my university modules - I began to think about how the Star Wars Universe my also relate to the Huddersfield Urban Study Project.
When thinking about a utopia I can't help but think about an environment where architecture and vegetation are combined in an urban environment, buildings that reflect the culture of a site as well as projecting themselves technologically into the future. Aesthetically the location should be pleasant to look at, if not calming and beautiful. The planet of Naboo reminds me of all of these characteristics I look for in an utopic environment as well as the technological advancements I think we could consider for unitfifteen. The matte painting above shows the juxtapositioning of the hard, cold surfaces of the star ship base against the sunny, pastoral environment and rolling hills in the background of Naboo, indicating a sense of harmony and heirachy within the world.
The layout of the urban landscape and how it relates to the narrative introduces elements of a city that we are yet to consider, for example the hangar situated on the boundary of the site on the edge of a cliff, the perfect exposed location for Galactic Empire star ships to land and take-off. There are elements within the society of Naboo that support the development of the architecture within the city and the culture is rich with heritage and tradition. Theed is situated comfortably within the meanders of the rivers of Naboo and although within the confines of the city there seems to be an abundance of urban development, beyond the boundary of civilisation there are vasts amounts of open green sapce, rolling hills, mountains rivers and lakes.
