Thesis Research // Interstellar and 2001 - A Space Odyssey

Continuing research following on from the dissertation structure submission, I began to search for data which would be relevant for my chapters speculating expanding into the fourth dimension as a way to create space and architecture.

Heavily inspired by Interstellar and the tesseract towards the end of the film, I began to read "The Science of Interstellar" written by the consultant astrophysicist involved with advising Nolan in directing and producing the film. It was mentioned throughout the text that Nolan took inspiration from "2001 - A Space Odyssey" through using slit scans to create some of the crazy visuals especially when passing through the wormhole.

Both films build on the idea of humans evolving into their next phase of being. "2001 - A Space Odyssey" uses to monoliths to suggest/trigger the next stage of evolution, through to the ending of the film where the main protagonist is portrayed as a "space child" returning to Earth. Interstellar, draws on the idea of harnessing gravity in order to manipulate space and time; in turn creating 4D humans who can open wormholes in order to transport themselves through spacetime resulting in the preservation of the human race.
