Thesis Research // Squid Game and Escheresque Architecture

Originally, I began to watch squid games not only through recommendation but as a way to look into how society can play a part in dystopian and utopian settings. However, through the development of my theme and interest in the escheresque like staircase featured in the series (which turned out to be directly inspired by the Penrose stair) I felt that the form can link in with the idea of creating paradoxical spaces.

When looking at this image, much like Escher work - additional levels of depth seems to appear the more you inspect and follow the flow of the form. The twisting of the never-ending staircases and doorways to no-where visually confuses the viewer as I am sure the user would be as well.

After binging the rest of squid game, I reluctantly moved on and began to look into existing pieces of architecture which could be considered paradoxical. Although perspective plays an important role in many of these images - as creating an impossible structure in 3 dimensions is dependant on the perspective of the observer to create the illusion of the 4th dimension.

Similar to the manifold garden, my time observatory will not be limited to the 3 dimensions of reality, therefore I can explore the physical formations of tessellation and paradoxical spaces through model making.
